Ensuring Mobility Issues Are Catered For
Looking around a young relative’s new home – well new to her, I was struck by two very strange things. The house is under twenty years old, it was individually built as an infill to the side of an existing house that used to have a massive garden plot. The two things that hit me immediately were the funny little wash basins in the downstairs cloakroom and the ensuite bathroom upstairs. In each case the tiniest little basins have been put on a massive expanse of wall – nothing else either side. The taps are also very tiny. The explanation came from the new owners that the large rooms were designed to accommodate wheelchair users or disabled with some mobility. My mind immediately wondered how anyone in that position was going to be able to a) wash more than a little finger in the tiny basin and b) get a wheelchair up the stairs . . . . .
